Vaginal Atrophy and Menopause

Dryness.

Burning.

Itching.

You know.

Down there!

You have tried the over the counter stuff, but it isn’t helping.

You’ve given up on sex altogether because it just hurts too much.

You are not alone.

The likelihood of suffering from the above symptoms if you are over age 50 is:

Dryness – 2 out of every 3 women your age

Itching – 1 out of every 2 women your age

Burning – 1 out of every 2 women your age

See? You really are not alone.

Even if you are not yet 50, you could still be starting to experience one or all of these symptoms commonly known as vaginal atrophy or genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM).

Vaginal atrophy (atrophic vaginitis) is the thinning, drying and inflammation of the vaginal walls due to your body having less estrogen. For many women, vaginal atrophy not only makes sex painful, but also leads to distressing and embarrassing urinary symptoms:

1. bladder leakage;

2. getting up at night to pee (also called nocturia);

3. having to get to the washroom right away (urgency)

4. going more frequently.

The cause for these distressing symptoms are a fall in your body’s estrogen production. This leads to a thinning of the cell thickness in the skin wall of your vagina and in your bladder.
